Photo Album of "Kings Day" - January 6, 2000, Garachico, Tenerife.

Epiphany, the twelfth day after Christmas is the greater of the two holidays celebrated here. The larger towns have grand pageants with the Three Kings arriving on camels, bearing gifts for all the children of the village...surrounded by goats, sheep and shephards.

King Caspar. King Malichore King Balthazar
Live camels are readily available here because we are near the African Desert. The Kings spoke to the crowd about World Peace. We climbed to the smaller village above the town where the Kings first arrive. A smalller crowd, children were lifted onto King's laps while atop a camel!
Every child was called by name to sit with a King and receive a gift brought especially for him or her. Roman Soldiers for crowd control! Soldiers and slaves to help and protect the Kings.
The Madonna arrives. The Christ Child is in the center of the huge halo. The Madonna. Mary and Joseph at the creche.
The crowd welcomes the Christ Child with their own shining stars. Balthazar had a gift just for Thomas...a Gameboy case. Always fireworks! 1:30am we headed home. Canarian children go quickly to bed for they awake the next morning to receive many gifts from the Kings.
